Gregory L. Pando
 John S. Marini

ALSO
PRESENT: Kevin T. Feeney – ZBA Alternate Member
Velma J. Coffey – Admin. Asst/Recording Secretary

Mr. Carroll opened the meeting at 7:00pm in the Salah Meeting Room, Memorial Hall.

SCHEDULED HEARINGS
ID Sign Group/D’Angelo’s Corp – 351 Turnpike St – 05-12-SP-V – Sign
Petitioner would like to erect new freestanding sign damaged by vehicle. Sign is larger and
changes made to sign panels. Scott Cashman from ID Sign Group appeared for the petitioner,
D’Angelo’s Corp. The sign was hit by a tractor trailer. There are 3 businesses in this location:
D’Angelo’s, Cantondale Chiropractor and Kitchen Plus. They would like to put all tenants on the
new sign. The original D’Angelo’s sign (from 1978) was 4ft high x 12ft wide. The chiropractor
sign will be 3ft high x 6 ft wide. Chairman Carroll noted that the photo submitted was an old one.
We prefer sign with tenant panels. Mr. Marini asked if it was a double sided sign and if it was
internally illuminated. Chairman Carroll reads the 1978 decision allowing 4 colors. Mr.
Cashman said there are 7 colors on the new sign. Chairman Carroll stated that the whole sign
should only have 4 colors. He suggested that Mr. Cashman go back to the tenants and tell them
to choose colors from D’Angelo’s colors. A sign on the building is ok, but freestanding sign
must be 4 colors. Mr. Marini asked if it was going to be in the same location. Mr. Cashman said
it was, but they are putting bollards around it, near the end of the island. Trucks pull in at night
and when they pull out in the morning they get too close. Chairman Carroll reiterated he should
choose 4 colors. Mr. Pando made a motion to grant a Special Permit for a freestanding sign to

replace the existing permitted sign. Mr. Marini seconded the motion.

Signs & Graphics (Dione Santos) / Canton Dental Collaborative - 726 Washington St – 06-
12-SP-V – Sign
Freestanding sign and additional wall sign (on station side of building). Dione Santos appeared
before the Board on behalf of the petitioner. Questioned if they had gone to CCDRB. They are
scheduled for Febriary. They would like 3 signs, a monument sign, 14 ft in from property line, 1
wall sign at the side entrance (parking lot) and a wall sign on the railroad station side of the
business. There are no lights or uplights. The monument sign will be lit, but only the letters light
up (it is backlit only through the letters). Chairman Carroll repeated this information and asked
about why they stacked parking of 6 cars. Mr. Pando said they could do a modification of a site
plan and come back to us on this. Dr. Lakis, the petitioner, came into the meeting and took a seat
with Mr. Santos. He said that employees park that way. Chairman Carroll stated you must have
parking for customers and employees. This is his view, all day. Stacking the employees vehicles
is not in regard to the By-Law intention. Dr. Lakis said he tries to keep open spaces for

customers. Chairman Carroll stated that he spoke to the Building Commissioner today, and he
will look at the parking plan. Mr. Pando said he liked the back lit channel letters. (Very tasteful).
He had no difficulty with the monument sign, as they block our most of the sign, only the
lettering is lit. it is 9 ft to top of the sign. But, he did have a problem with the station side. It is

not related to an entrance. Mr. Marini concurred with Mr. Pando. He has a problem with the 3
sign. It is just thrown on the building. Chairman Carroll said you have a nice sign in front, going
North and South. There is a big antique building next door for 165 years that has had one
freestanding sign. Dr, Lakis said it is visible coming that way (from Canton Center). There is a
hygienist there until 8:30pm. Chairman Carroll said talk to the Commissioner regarding parking.
Mr. Pando made a motion to grant a Special Permit for signage (for 2 signs): 1- channel letter
backlit “Canton Dental Collaborative”, and 1 – freestanding monument sign 48” wide by 7ft high,
the top of the sign to be no higher than 9 ft above grade. Internally illuminated, lettering only,
with black out background. Colors to be blue, red, grey and white. Chairman Carroll agreed with
Mr. Pando, but asked: what about channel letters. Mr. Pando said that the By-Law allows 1 for
nd
each entrance, channel letters. Mr. Pando amended the decision for a 2 set of channel letters
“Canton Dental Collaborative” on the south side near the railroad tracks. Hours of illumination to
be dusk to 9pm, timed to 1 hr after closing. This Board retains the right to modify this Special
Permit in case the petitioner wants to change the hours, you can come back informally. Mr.
Marini asked if when parking cars, was the lot ever full? Dr. Lakis said that on certain days we
need the spaces. Chairman Carroll asked the petitioner to relay information to us regarding

parking. Chairman Carroll said we will grant a temporary permit for the
existing sign that is up without a permit.

Short discussion on performance standards in the By-Laws.

Informal Hearings
United Sign Co – Copley Controls – 20 Dan Rd
Reface sign panels (new logo/Copley) and future tenants. Ed Juralewicz appeared before the
Board on behalf of the petitioner, Copley Controls. They would like to re-face the existing sign
which is 8ft high x 4ft wide. It is not illuminated. They now only occupy 1/3 of the building and
would like a sign for future tenants. The sign will retain same proportions. Chairman Carroll
said as tenants go in, you can put a sign on the building over each entrance. This is an
nd
appropriate request. Mr. Pando asked if this was the 2 building on the right. This is an
appropriate request to me. No substantive changes. Mr. Marini asked if it is double sided or
illuminated. NO illumination, but it is double sided. Mr. Pando made a motion to grant a
modification to an existing monument sign, 5x4 sections in accordance with drawings dated Jan.
Voted 3-0 to approve.
