Minutes Open Space Committee Meeting of August 11, 2015 On Tuesday, August 11, 2015 the Open Space Committee met at 5:30 pm at the Canton Library Conference Room. Attending: Lisa Lopez (representing CCPC), Alan Leary (citizen representative), Marilyn Curran (citizen representative), Carl Lavin (Con Com representative), Fred Fairfield (citizen representative), Nick Perelli (Parks & Recreation representative) Absent: Tori McLain (Planning Board representative) Also in attendance were Doug Jones and Carolyn Burke of the Boston landscape architecture firm of Keith LeBlanc, Bernie Plante, developer of the (former) Plymouth Rubber site, and Jeremy Comeau, Chair of the Revere Commission and member of the Building Use Committee. 1.Mr. Jones introduced himself and his colleague, Carolyn Burke as well as the design firm of Keith LeBlanc. He gave an overview of his experience and interest in the project. 2.Ms. Lopez explained that a threshold issue for the Committee is to recommend to the Commission whether or not to move the historic Revere barn to another nearby site on the Open Space, closer to the historic Revere Rolling Mill. She asked Mr. Plante to describe the reasons for his recommendation to move the Barn which related to increasing available headroom on the lower floor, escaping the water and ledge on the current site, and optimizing the aesthetics of a planned courtyard between the Barn and the Rolling Mill. After discussion, and considering Mr. Jones’ recommendation as well to move the Barn, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously: VOTED: to recommend to the Revere Commission that the Barn be moved to a site closer to the Rolling Mill, the particular site to be chosen by the Developer based upon the landscape architect’s recommendation after further study. The Committee urged that consideration be given in the final landscape plan to identifying, in a suitable way, the original foundation “foot print” of the Barn. Possible treatments could include interpretive signage, corner stones, or a raised platform. 3.Mr. Jones led a lively discussion of the Committee’s aspirations for the “look and feel” of the Open Space, once landscaped. Discussion subjects included significance to Paul Revere of his “Cantondale,” the possibility of integrating

historic foundation and retaining walls into the plan, the historic industrial/commercial significance of the site, the need to integrally relate the waterways to vistas and uses, site lines from Revere Street, Neponset Street and the Aqueduct, a desired “Town Green,” and budgetary constraints. Mr. Jones will consider all the input thus far and come back to the Committee with specific topic areas and issues that warrant more discussion and input. 4.The Committee discussed the need for designated leadership including Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary, whereupon, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously: VOTED: that Lisa Lopez be elected Chair, Fred Fairfield be elected Vice Chair and Alan Leary be elected Secretary. 5.Ms. Curran recommended that consideration be given to moving Town owned historic artifacts to the site. There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at approximately 7 pm. A true and accurate record: _____________________ Attest: Lisa Lopez
