Public Hearing to consider establishing a Fire Department Lift Assist Policy and fee for such service
Clerk read the notice into public record.
Motion was made to open the public hearing.
Motion: Mr. T. Theodore Second: Mr. M. Porter Vote: 5-0
Chief Doody appeared before the Board to propose charging a fee for Fire Department calls from the
large assisted living, nursing home, rehabilitation facilities in town for anon-emergency, non-transport
lift assist calls. He noted that because they receive frequent calls, and that the staff refuses to move the
individual, he would like to charge the facility a lift assist fee. There was a discussion and a $500 fee is
being proposed. The vote needs to be at the next meeting due to the Administrative Code. Hearing was
not closed.
Motion was made that the Board find that Assisted Living, Nursing Home, and other rehabilitation
facilities in Canton have adopted a practice of calling the Canton Fire Department for lift assists which
such facilities could perform on their own, and further, it is found that the number of such lift assists has
affected the department's ability to respond to other calls and to provide other services to the Town.
further move that the Board establish a policy to assess a fee for lift assist services, which fee maybe
amended from time to time, and that the initial lift assist fee be established at a rate of $500.00 per
incident, effective 7/1/2020, and that said fee is to be assessed to the facility making the lift assist
request, and I move that that these motions be laid upon the table and the hearing be continued for a
vote at the Selectmen's December 17, 2019 meeting.
Motion: Mr. T. Theodore Second: Mr. M. Porter Vote: 5-0
