Canton Sustainability CommitteeMinutes October 5, 2020 Meeting held Via Zoom Members Present: Christine Smith, Tim Calabrese, Andrea Stuart, Patti McDermott, Erin Connor Grant Updates Carolyn was not present to give an update on the Library grant. There has been no word on the MAPC grant from Laura Smead. Andrea had a question about the education component of the grant and whether there was a tie in for the schools. Andrea will follow up with Laura. Organics Webinar Patti attended DEP’s Organics Webinar and provided updates on what other towns are doing. Some towns have applied for grants to help with curbside composting. Wellesley has their own truck for pickup. Natick switched to PAYT and a waste audit showed that 40% of the trash came from organic materials so they applied for a pilot grant to start curbside composting to remove organics from the trash. Trash and Recycling Survey Erin secured a donation of a $200.00 Wegmans gift card to be used for a drawing as an incentive for people to take the survey. At the last meeting we decided to hold off on timing of survey due to “survey overload” from schools. Now that time has passed it is time to think about putting it out. Questions are in good shape. Christine and Patti will reach out to the town administrator to get on Select Board agenda. We still don’t know when the next waste contract will be put out to bid as the Republic one is up for renewal. There was a discussion of how to publicize the survey. Suggestions included asking Laura Smead to put it on Facebook from Planning Department page, post on Facebook Everything Canton, share with our own networks, as the Town to put it in an alert that goes out to those who have signed up for text/email alerts, share with other boards/committees and ask them to share. After discussion the consensus was not to ask the school department to assist as they have sent out a lot of surveys to parents this year. Municipal Energy Aggregation There will be a presentation to the Select Board at the November 10 Select Board meeting. This is an initiative supported by the Sustainability Committee. Sustainability Committee Organization and Structure Christine suggested that the Committee should have a formal vote for Chair, Vice Chair and Clerk. After discussion, the following officers were moved, seconded and unanimously voted: Christine Smith, Chair Patti McDermott, Vice Chair Tim Calabrese, Clerk The format of the Committee calls for a student member of the Committee, which has not been filled. Andrea will reach out to her contacts in the school for a recommendation. At 8:04 pm, it was moved, seconded and unanimously voted to adjourn the meeting. Next Meeting is November 2, 2020.
