Review and approval of minutes from June 27, 2022 Motion made by Stephen Marshall, seconded by Patricia McDermott to approve the minutes as submitted. Motion passed unanimously. 2. Sustainability Day at Canton Farmer’s Market on August 7 Christine Smith reported that Black Earth Compost would be joining the Committee at the Farmer’s Market on August 7th. The focus of the market that day is Sustainable Farming, Local food and composting. Black Earth will participate in composting presentations. At the last meeting the Committee approved to fund a subscription for Black Earth to raffle off but afterwards that would not be allowed under procurement rules. The other option would be to fund starter kits for the first 10 Canton residents to sign up at the Farmer’s Market. The cost is $0/kit so a total of $400.00. There is plenty of money in the budget. Motion made by Katy Clark to approve the cost of subsidizing composting starter kits for the first 10 Canton residents to sign up for curbside composting at the Farmer’s Market, seconded by Patricia McDermott. Motion passed unanimously. 3. Discussion of Composting at Schools/Police Station/Fire Station At the June 27 meeting, the committee decided that composting at all of the schools was not feasible however we would investigate composting in the teacher’s lounges as well as ask the Police and Fire departments if this is something they would consider. Erin Connor was going to report back about the Police and Fire but was absent from today’s meeting. As for the schools, Stephen Marshall said he thought that might be feasible and he would help start the conversation about this. Katy Clark had also offered to reach out to the Galvin middle school. This matter will be discussed further at the next meeting. 4. Teracycle Follow-up Discussion Patricia McDermott reported that she had spoken to the cafeteria director at the Luce School about the Terracylce box for disposable gloves and that she was amenable to the idea. Patricia McDermott said she could follow up with Martha Lawless, head of CPS dining services. Stephen Marshall agreed that this seemed like a feasible project and good start to promote recycling initiatives at the schools. Stephen agreed to do some outreach about this matter as well. 5. Items not reasonably anticipated in advance of meeting Christine Smith reported that she just found out that she would be at the Select Board meeting on August 2nd to discuss the partnering with Home Works to promote the Mass Save program, as was voted on by the Committee in a previous meeting. Christine Smith also reported that she had just found out that the DPW had applied for and been awarded a $10,000.00 mattress recycling grant. This is a good grant because as of November 2022, mattress will no longer be allowed to be thrown out. There was discussion of where a bin would be located and
