This will be a comprehensive assessment and detailed report on the
current conditions of the Canton Historical Society Headquarters. This
historic building houses the Society’s vast collection of objects and
documents from 400 years of Canton History.
The assessment will include a current condition assessment of the
building, a remedial work plan for repairs necessary to ensure the
building’s integrity and functionality, an ADA accessibility assessment of
Project: the current building along with plans for addressing any deficiencies,
and an evaluation of the basement space’s suitability for conversion into
Historical Society archival storage.
Facility Analysis The project is estimated to cost $50,000 total and the Historical Society
has committed to cover the remaining $10,000 through fundraising and
      CCPC Funding private donations.
    Recommendation:
$40,000 The CCPC voted 8-0-1 to recommend funding the project at $40,000.

This project will fund the restoration of the original 1902 historic portion of
                      the library.
Major repairs/renovations to the roof and HVAC system are almost complete
and the Library is now focusing on internal repairs.
The historic portion lies inside the main entrance and is comprised of the
central rotunda and the 2 rooms adjoining it.
There is significant water damage and degradation of the rooms and historic
Project: details in the moldings are crumbling. The damage in these frequently used
spaces is a danger to the community (there are currently nets in place to
catch falling pieces of plaster) and there is significant risk to the historic
Public Library artworks that reside there, along with the loss of the historical details on the
                      building itself.
 Restoration of
Funds would be used to repair structural issues and restore this historic area
Historic Rooms to its original state.
While the original request was for $150,000 members of the CCPC felt that
CCPC Funding did not take into account the higher rates for professional historical
Recommendation: restoration and suggested increasing the amount to $200,000.
$200,000 The CCPC voted unanimously to recommend funding the project at $200,000.

The funds will be used to conduct a site assessment of the historic
portions of the cemetery, make a plan for the restoration and/or repair of

Canton Corner Canton Corner Cemetery is an important historic asset for Canton, and
hundreds of gravestones in the colonial/historic section of the cemetery
Cemetery Historic are in disrepair or are almost destroyed. Some of the stones need
immediate help and cannot wait for next year’s funding cycle, which is
Gravestone why funding is being requested for a Master Plan for the historic cemetery
Preservation and and for repairs concurrently.
Restoration The CCPC voted 8-1 to recommend that $95,000 be appropriated for a

Christ’s Ambassador Ministries will use these funds for the salvage and
restoration of the historic steeple and bell tower façade of the
                       schoolhouse-turned-church.
The Church, which currently owns the building, is planning major
renovations/expansions for the property, but recognizes that the
Project: Ponkapoag Schoolhouse is a very visible historic asset for the Town of
Canton, and wants to preserve the forward-facing historic elements.
      Ponkapoag
The preserved historic area would be accessible to the public by
Schoolhouse Bell coordinating with the Ministry. Without CPA funding it is likely that all the
Tower and Façade historic elements of the building will be lost.
Preservation The CCPC voted 8-1 to recommend funding the project at $123,000 with
the following caveats: 1) that a preservation restriction be obtained to
ensure this historical resource remains available to the Citizens of Canton,
CCPC Funding 2) that the funds are not released until a building permit is issued for the
Recommendation: full renovation/expansion project, and 3) that all works is done under the
           $123,000 Secretary of Interior’s standards.
